IQ vs. EQ: Who is the winner?
posted on: June 21, 2011
Most of us today believe that Intelligence Quotient (IQ) will always win over Emotional Quotient (EQ) and IQ is what brings success to our businesses, families, and communities. WRONG, modern research proofs otherwise.
Emotions, as we know, are intense feelings directed at someone or something, and intelligence is the capacity to do mental activities. EQ is the ability to build people up, bring them together, and motivate them to do their best.
People with this competence respect and relate well to people from varied backgrounds; handle difficult people and tense situations with diplomacy and tact; spot difficult conflict, bring disagreements into open, and help de-escalate; orchestrate win-win solutions, etc.
Unlike IQ, EQ can be learned and improved throughout life.
Did you know that in Life…
Did you know that in Life…
- 75% of careers are derailed for reasons related to emotional competencies… (The Center for Creative Leadership,1994)
- “…Depression, grieving, pessimism all seem to worsen health in both the short run and long term” (Martin Seligman, Learned Optimism, 1998)
- As much as 80% of adult “success” comes from EQ (Daniel Goleman, 1995)
- Social and emotional abilities were 4X more important than IQ in determining professional success and prestige (Daniel Goleman, 1995)
- Optimism is a skill that can be taught…
- Optimists are more motivated, more successful, have higher levels of achievement…
- Plus significantly better physical and mental health (Seligman, 1991)
Did you know that in Business… - In a multinational consulting firm, partners who showed high EQ competencies earned 139% more than the lower EQ partners (Boyatzis, 1999).
A Mfg Plant implemented EQ on Supervisors
- Lost-time accidents were reduced by 50%
- Formal grievances were reduced from 15 to 3 per year, and the plant exceeded productivity by $250,000 (Pesuric & Byham, 1996)
According to Daniel Goldman, 1995, “Cognitive skill ‘gets you in the door’ of a company, but emotional skill helps you thrive once you’re hired.”
There is convincing evidence that severe lack of EQ could affect one’s health. This is true because the lack of ability to handle frustration, control emotions, and get along with other people builds a long-lasting high stress level in the individual that leads to health problems.
Do you want to have peace, joy, happiness, and good health, try EQ, it works.
